How To Use A Ouija Board

Posted by admin On September - 23 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Ouija boards are flat boards with printed letters, numbers and other symbols. It is sometimes called spirit boards or talking boards because spiritualists, clairvoyants and psychics make use of the board to talk to spirits. Because of its popularity as a medium to communicate with souls, the Catholic Church and other related religious institutions have branded it to be a work of the devil and are prohibited to be used by its flowers. Cynics and non-believers of the paranormal and supernatural though, think that the board is nothing but a joke. The messages spelled out are just the unconscious movements of the people using the board.

Performing ouija is very simple. All you need is a ouija board, a planchette (a heart shaped wood which will indicate the letters that will spell the answers to the questions asked; a coin or a glass are sometimes used), and at least two participants, one of which will be the medium (the one officially assigned to ask the questions.

It is advisable to perform the ouija at night. It is said that during the night, there is less interference with communicating with the spirits during the night. The participants are required to sit on the floor and place the board on their laps. Some practices prohibit the use of a table although on some other parts of the world, there is leniency on this rule.

The users then should place the fingers of both hands on the planchette or pointer. Purposely move the pointer around the board once or twice. While doing this, the medium should announce that the session should only allow a positive experience and all negative energies are not welcome.

Start the session with simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions. Don’t expect to get answers right away. It takes time for the board to actually work. When it does start to answer, be sure to thank the board or spirits for communicating with you. After this, you can start asking more important questions. Make sure though that you don’t ask any stupid questions that will only cause you to worry needlessly. Remember also not to ask the spirits to prove that they are real or are present in the room. It will only cause distress.

During the session, make sure that someone, other than the two users of the board will write down the answers. This means that during the session, the people in the room aer not limited to the two users of the board.

Once the session ends, make sure to place the planchette to the goodbye message, remove your hands from the planchette and close the board. Maintain control of the board. If it starts giving rude or vulgar answers to your questions, it might be better to just close the board.

The answers you might get may not always be true. Don’t believe every answer you get to be accurate. Just like any other source of information, it is not always factual. It is also very important for you to remember that it’s just a board sold popularly as a toy. Although spiritualists, clairvoyants and psychics make use of it to communicate with the spirit world, there is a possibility that it’s not real or the person claiming to be a psychic isn’t really a psychic.

Recorded history tells us that Ouija has been around for quite a long time now. The earliest known device with the same function was found in China around 1100 B.C. during the Song Dynasty. Back then, it was known as fuji or ‘planchette writing’. Like the modern Ouija boards, fuji was used to contact the dead by asking questions and getting the answers by moving planchettes from one letter or character to another. The practice was then stopped during the Qing dynasty.

During the late 1800’s planchettes bcame a fad and was sold as a novelty item. On 1891, businessmen Elijah Bond and Charles Kennard got a patent for producing planchettes. On 1901, the patent for making the ouija board was received by the partners and started manufacturing and selling the spirit boards. Most of which were made of wood.

Since then, a lot of spirit boards has been manufactured. During the 1920’s up to the 1960’s the spirit board’s popularity reached it’s peaked. It was during this period that a lot of Ouija Boards were sold to the market.

Expectedly, there are a lot of vintage and antique talking boards out there. Since there are at least ten known brands that manufacture the product under different names, you can find varying and interesting designs of old ouija boards.

The contents, symbols, and characters that you will find in the boards are all the same. You will find letters, ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ words, and the ‘Good Bye’ word printed on them. The only difference would be the designs of the prints, the shape of the board and the color. If you are lucky, you might even find spirit boards with the letters, words and symbols carved on the wood.

With the long history of the Ouija board, you can surely find vintage boards with interesting and intricate designs.

Ouija Board Experiences and Stories

The Ouija board is a flat board usually made of wood that is used to talk to spirits. It is for this reason that it is sometimes called the ‘spirit board’. Many people who believe in the supernatural and the paranormal believe in the powers and the abilities of the ouija board while skeptics think that the board is a hoax.

For centuries, the board has been used to communicate with the other world. It has been used to ask for guidance and in some cases, it has been used for the purpose of divination. With it’s rising popularity during the 20’s up to the 60’s, a lot of individuals owned, used and experienced the board.

Expectedly, with the high number of people who have performed ouija, you would hear a lot of stories and experiences of people with regards to the board. Some of them are pleasant, some of them are scary, but definitely, all of them are freaky and almost unbelievable.

One example of a story involving a Ouija board is this story of three girls. They had a sleep over in one of their houses and decided to use the board. During that session, they were able to communicate with a spirit named Kevin. Kevin died at the age of 15 but never told the girls how he died.

That night, they had a great conversation with the spirit. He mentioned that he has been following two of the girls for three years now. He never dared followed one of the girls because her house was already filled with a lot of spirits, evil ones included.

When their session was over late that night, the girls pointed the planchette to ‘Goodbye’ and told the spirit that they would be back in a while. They went downstairs and remembered looking at the board and leaving the planchette at letter ‘R’. As they went down, they were joking that what if the planchette moved to ‘Goodbye’ when they got back. Obviously, at this point, they still didn’t believe that they were actually talking to a spirit.

They returned to the room a few minutes later and got ready for bed. Before they turned in, one of the girls looked at the board and saw the planchette pointing at ‘Goodbye’. The three girls shouted and started freaking out realizing that the spirit they were talking to was actually real.

This story is really freaky. It’s not that dark but it can still give you goosebumps. If you really think about it, the girls are actually lucky since they were able to contact a decent spirit. Other people have experienced a lot worse compared to this.

In one account, the participants of the ouija had a darker experience. It involved three girls as well. One of which was a skeptic who didn’t believe that the board was real.

At the beginning, the board took a while to actually work. When they aked if there was a spirit, the planchette didn’t move. There was no response. The skeptic shouted that it was a waste of time and started cursing at the spirits. That’s when the planchette flew to the corner of the room.

The skeptic laughed and accused the two other girls of pulling one on her. The two friends denied it while one of them picked the planchette again. When they put it back on the board, they touched the planchette again and it started moving in circles. Again, the skeptic accused the two girls of moving it. When they denied it, they agreed to take their fingers of the planchette. It moved on its own.

This time, all three of them were freaked out. They started asking the spirit some questions. While this was happening, the skeptic froze in fear in one corner of the room. When they talked to her, she shouted something really inadvisable. She asked the board when she was going to die. The board answered, ‘NOW’. They started screaming and freaking out. None of them dared touch the board nor the planchette.

That night, the skeptic girl was so afraid to go home alone and since her friend’s mom was out of town that night, she decided to sleep over at her friend’s house. They even slept on the same bed out of fear. When they were half asleep, the skeptic screamed. Her friend woke up and asked what was going on. She told her that there was a figure in front of them. The friend looked and there was a dark figure standing at the foot of the bed.

They freaked and hid under the covers. They stayed like that and awake the whole night. When morning came, the friend’s mother returned home and was surprised to see them in bed like that. When they told her the story, the mother didn’t believe at first but seeing how scared they were, she decided to have the room blessed by a priest.

The spirit never showed itself again but the girl could never go sleep in her room again.

I’m not sure if there is any truth to these stories. These may just be urban legends formed by the figment of creative people’s imaginations. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t hurt to be careful when using or perofimg Ouija.
